The Ultimate Door County Girls Trip (3-day Itinerary)

Door County

From female-owned wines and tasting rooms to the best places to get that perfect Instagram shot to encapsulate your getaway –  where to see the best sunsets and some unique experiences to plan to enjoy together – this is the only itinerary and guide you need for a girls trip to Door County.

3-day Door County Girls Trip Itinerary

Where to stay for your Door County girls trip: Porte Haven

Porte Haven still gives you the feel of getting away to the cabin at the lake, while still being high-end. The perfect combination for your girl’s trip! There’s no better first impression than taking Jens Jensen’s famous windy road to the cabin. You’re on a bluff on Lake Michigan with views of four islands, the sounds of crashing waves, and the feeling of being on top of the world. You’ll have endless places to entertain from the 3-season room with a metal roof to listen to a rainstorm, to the boathouse that was converted to an entertaining space that feels like an NYC loft with a pool table, darts, game table, and pub tables with a lake view. Two fire pits, two fireplaces, a two-story deck, a high-end kitchen, Kohler spa-like setting in the bathrooms with a steam mist shower and jet tub. Really, it has it all! You can rent the cabin right here.

Where to eat for your Door County girls trip

Trixie’s

Trixie’s is the sister restaurant to Wickman House (our favorite in Door County!). It’s difficult to get a reservation there and if you’re looking for something similar, this is your spot. The servers at each at both of these restaurants are top notch and their knowledge and descriptions of the menu is such a unique experience! One thing I especially loved and appreciated about Trixie’s menu is that the core items stay the same, however, they mix it up by using in-season fresh ingredients and give the dishes a fresh twist so each visit here is never quite the same. The polenta battered mushrooms are a must and we also loved the pan-seared whitefish fettuccine and gnocchi du jour. First come first served and if there’s a wait for a table – no problem, head over to the Pearl Wine Cottage right next door for a pre-dinner drink – we really loved the Rose flight!

Roots

Ok, Roots is a new favorite spot that we’ll be going back to over and over again. The only downfall is it’s only open for lunch and a few pub nights on Monday’s and Tuesday’s so you really need to plan out when to go! The patio is the perfect place to relax and try some local beers (we recommend Sway crafted by a Door County brewer!) and you cannot leave without trying the lemon caesar salad, truffle chips or chocolate chip cookie dough balls to compliment whichever main course you select (all of which are ah-mazing).

Door County Underground

Since you’re staying in such a beautiful cabin with unbeatable views, we love to have dinner come to us and hire a private chef especially if you’ve spent the day exploring Door County and just want to relax at the cabin! Door County Underground will curate a custom menu and cook for you right at the cabin. It’s an incredible intimate experience you won’t forget! They also offer farm dinners the 1st Saturday monthly and “Sunset” dinners the 3rd Saturday of each month at Shoreline Restaurant down the road.

Unique things to do on a Door County girls trip

Sail Door County

If you schedule one thing, let Sail Door County be it. You will not be disappointed to experience Door County from the water in a sailboat. It’s always top of my list when we come to Door County! You can bring drinks and food on the boat so go grab cherry mimosas and/or coffee and a breakfast sandwich to go at Skipstone or, for a sunset sail – grab some local beer and pizza at Wild Tomato to go both right across the street from where you board.

Cooking classes

The Savory Spoon cooking school offers unique themed classes like “seasonal sensations”,  “summertime bistro” and a “cheese maker dinner”. Such a fun way to connect and spend time as a group learning and eating local cuisine. The cooking school is a short 10 minute ride from the cabin so a perfect location to add a fun experience to the agenda.

Craft cocktails on a patio

I don’t know about you, but there’s simply nothing better than beautiful weather, a unique craft cocktail, my best friends, and a patio to sit on for hours. That’s the ingredients for a perfect afternoon for me, and the place to do it is Hatch Distilling. Their motto on their website that I love is “we are distillers, beekeepers, farmers, &foragers pushing the boundaries of what “craft” is”. Try a flight of their spirits or order a craft cocktail and get ready to waste the afternoon away.

Best place to shopwhere to shop door county girls weekend

It wouldn’t be a Door County girls weekend without stopping by some of the shops! The only place I insist that people visit is Sister Golden because it’s just such a unique store with custom flower prints made by the owner. One-of-a-kind vintage pieces made by artisans all over the world – you’ll love every minute spent checking out this adorable shop in Fish Creek. We’ve got their art hanging in the bunk room at the cabin (and in the rooms of our home as well!) and we think you’ll love to take a piece home with you, too.

Dance the night away at Husby’s or the Stabbur Beer Garden

We celebrated my 40th birthday and I had 8 of my best friends stay at Porte Haven and we did so many of the things recommended on this list. The show stopper was dancing all night in the rain at the Stabbur beer garden.  You can also hit up Husby’s for this, most summer nights both will have live music. We’ve walked back and forth and picked the spot that we liked best and it’ll go down as one of my favorite memories.

The best photo stops for a Door County girls trip

I outline 10 instagrammable spots in this blog post, and here are a few additional ideas geared specifically to a Door County girls weekend!

Lighthouses

On the way into town, stop at the Sturgeon Bay Lighthouse (2501 Canal Rd, Sturgeon Bay) and park in the lot near the station’s gate, and follow the driveway from the front gate to the water. Lighthouses are such a symbolic feature of Door County and this specific lighthouse makes for a beautiful backdrop to kickoff your weekend because it’s read and stands out against the blue water.

Sunsets

You’ll want to catch a famous Door County sunset either at Sunset Beach in Fish Creek or for those looking to add a little workout and adventure to your itinerary, hike Door Bluff for my personal favorite place to see a sunset.

Vineyard

Nothing says girls weekend in Door County than beautiful photos at a vineyard! And, bonus, you can stock up on some Door County wine. Our favorite: Stones Throw Winery.

There you have it, a unique list of curated stops in Door County specifically geared for a girls weekend or couples getaway. Now, when are you coming to visit the cabin?
